John sits beside his mother, trying to have a moment of peace with his her when one of the children squeezes between John and Linda. He begins to stare at Linda, which makes John angry at the boy's lack of respect. John lifts him up and slaps him, which makes the boy cry. Ironically, the nurse rushes in and tells John he is the one who will have to leave. The children are being "death-conditioned" to have no fear or sense of loss when someone dies.
