According to Mustapha Mond in "Brave New World," creativity, emotions, and the arts must be sacrificed in order to guard against corruption and loss: "You can't make tragedies without sacrificing stability." For, Mond explains, human emotions can be inspiration for terrible change.
The best way to preserve stability is to keep most people on a level where they do not think for themselves. Thus, the World State conditions people from birth and controls them with soma which removes any discontent. People's thinking must remain within the social order.
It is interesting that Mustapha Mond does not follow his own directives, for his thinking extends to forbidden books and ideas.
