Three years later, Brand and Agnes are married and living in the little village by the fiord where Brand has decided to serve as pastor. Brand's mother is on her deathbed, and he waits for her summons, refusing to go serve her last rites until she agrees to give her fortune up to charity. At the same time, Brand and Agnes discuss the fact that their son, Alf, is becoming sick. Various messengers come to Brand, telling him that his mother is willing to give up half of her fortune, then ninetenths, but she is unwilling to give up all of it.
