   Basic summary: 10 French people flee the advancing Prussians during a war. During their retreat, they are held up by a Prussian commander who demands to have sex with the prostitute Boule de Suif, who refuses. As time passes, her companions urge her to give in to the request. Finally, she agrees and the party is allowed to leave, but they scorn Boule de Suif and make her cry, even though she sacrificed to allow them all to leave.
