Boswell had come to London ostensibly to petition the Duke of Queensberry and the Countess of Northumberland for a commission in the Footguards. In fact, he came to enjoy the city. He admitted as much in his brief preface to the diary: “I shall regularly record the business or rather the pleasure of every day.” For Boswell pleasure meant eating, drinking, conversing, and making love, and these are the subjects that fill the pages of his journal.
