Basil Ransome, unemployed lawyer and aspiring writer, comes from Mississippi to seek his fortune. In Boston, he visits his wealthy cousin Olive Chancellor who, though younger than he, already seems to be a settled spinster. She challenges Ransome to accompany her to a feminist meeting where he is unimpressed by feminist ideas but fascinated with the speaker, lovely young Verena Tarrant.
