Required classes vary from college to college. As far as I know, the one requirement for all Boston University students is the two basic writing courses (WR100 and WR150). However, while requirements do exist, all schools allow students to choose when to fulfill them. For example, a freshman can hold off taking his mandatory writing classes until senior year! Freshman aren't required to take any particular courses, however, their choices are often limited because more advanced classes have basic ones listed a prerequisites.

Most colleges have generic requirements all students need to follow (ie. a certain number of Social Sciences or a Math classes). Fortunately, the University offers a wide variety of courses in all these generic topics, making sure that students can choose a class that interests them. A Science requirement, for example, can be fulfilled either by a typical Chemistry class or a Computer Programming course.
