In a world in which every movement is monitored, controlled, and regulated, and every small privilege is hard-won and precious, any kind of freedom is a valuable commodity. Because of apartheid and its strict laws governing the separation and rights of races in South Africa at the time of the play, this is the world occupied by the characters in Boesman and Lena.
