    A Boat to Nowhere begins in a small, remote Vietnamese village on the Gulf of Siam, about 200 miles south of Saigon, which is currently called Ho Chi Minh City.  The latter half of the story takes place on the waters of the Gulf of Siam and the South China Sea, which separates Vietnam from Thailand and Malaysia.

    Although the time frame is not specifically stated, the narrative appears to take place in the years after the American withdrawal from Vietnam, most likely during the third wave of people who fled the Communist government in 1978-1979.  The fictional villagers whose story is recounted embark on their journey during the pre-monsoon season, which would be in the months before April.
