Granny is the backbone of the family as their caretaker, teacher, and guardian. She has no tolerance for anyone who would patronize or demean her and the family, and she is quick to protect and defend her family against anyone who would dare to try to. She views the filmmakers as intruders, and the narrator is fearful of what Granny's reaction to them will be. Her role is to protect her family from anyone and anything that might harm them in any way.
