DNC launches McCainPedia
Monday, September 15th by Ben YatesMcCainPedia is a wiki to document all the bizarre stuff McCain is doing in his campaign, and the hard-conservative policies he’s trumpeted. But it’s not publicly editable — it’s “run by the DNC’s Research, Communications, and Internet teams”.
So why use a wiki if it’s not going to be publicly editable? Here’s my guess:
- Wikis are just a good way of writing collaboratively. And if you’re running MediaWiki anyway, why not tack “pedia” onto the name?
- It’s a marketing swipe at McCain, who has cultivated an image of being technologically illiterate. “Wiki” means techno-literate and forward-thinking.
- It’s a marketing swipe at McCain’s campaign, which has been run with astonishing secrecy and lack of ethics. “Wiki” means openness and trust.

We have our Canadian version, Scandalpedia (although it’s using the monobook theme and doesn’t seem to be using MediaWiki itself)
It’s the new rage. Wikis for political purposes.
