DNC launches McCainPedia

Monday, September 15th by Ben Yates

McCainPedia is a wiki to document all the bizarre stuff McCain is doing in his campaign, and the hard-conservative policies he’s trumpeted. But it’s not publicly editable — it’s “run by the DNC’s Research, Communications, and Internet teams”.

So why use a wiki if it’s not going to be publicly editable? Here’s my guess:

  1. Wikis are just a good way of writing collaboratively. And if you’re running MediaWiki anyway, why not tack “pedia” onto the name?
  2. It’s a marketing swipe at McCain, who has cultivated an image of being technologically illiterate. “Wiki” means techno-literate and forward-thinking.
  3. It’s a marketing swipe at McCain’s campaign, which has been run with astonishing secrecy and lack of ethics. “Wiki” means openness and trust.

*sighs* Whatever next? CONSERVApedia?! Ha! I think not.

  2. Tawker Says:

We have our Canadian version, Scandalpedia (although it’s using the monobook theme and doesn’t seem to be using MediaWiki itself)

It’s the new rage. Wikis for political purposes.
