Fifty States, Fifty Opportunities for Scholarship!

Today kicks off our 50 states, 50 scholarship blog segment. In our efforts to serve students all over the country, we want to highlight scholarships from every state in the union.

We won’t get to every school, but we will be able to hit regions that are often neglected. How many scholarships do you hear about coming from Alaska? Well there are some and we think plenty of students will be interested. You never know where the perfect opportunity may pop up!

Speaking of Alaska…

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Scholarship and Internship Opportunities

File this one away for next year as the deadline for this year has passed, but it’s a great opportunity!

  • Five scholarships of five-thousand (5,000) dollars are awarded  per academic year in healthcare-related fields to full-time undergraduate students 
  • Five scholarships of five-thousand (5,000) dollars per academic year in healthcare-related fields to full-time graduate students
  • Students must be Alaska Native or American Indian permanent Alaska residents.

CPAI 2008 Scholarship Program
Another future scholarship! The ConocoPhillips Alaska scholarship program is open to Alaska high school seniors planning to attend an institution of higher learning, academic or trade school.

  • Seven $5,000 in-state scholarships and thirteen $3,000 general scholarships will be awarded to Alaskan high school seniors.
  • A panel of judges will select the winners based on each student’s future potential to contribute their knowledge and talents in Alaska. In addition, each student’s service to their community, service to their school, school achievements, and financial need will be taken into consideration.

APA - Not Just a Writing Style

Many students know APA from the little style guides English teachers pass out before term papers are due. Well, besides telling people where to put a comma and how to cite books, the APA is also a place where psychology students, specifically graduate students can apply for a number of scholarships.

Psych students, break out your curriculum vitae and get moving, most of these scholarships are due on May 16th - yep, three days from now!

The Carol Williams-Nickelson Award for Women’s Leadership and Scholarship in Women’s Issues

Eligibility:

  • Be a female American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS).
  • Be in good academic standing in a doctoral program
  • Not an APAGS officers or subcommittee chair.

Required Materials:

  • A cover letter that includes the name of the award and introduction to application packet
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Essay

University of North Carolina Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship

According to their Web site, "the purpose of the Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship is to improve the breadth and quality of reporting of health and medical issues in minority or disadvantaged communities."

This scholarship offers a $6,000 stipend per semester, tuition, health insurance for all four semesters of the master program. Whoo hoo!

To qualify:

* be regularly admitted to the Medical Journalism Master’s Program in the School;
* have submitted a completed application for the award, including academic transcripts, GRE test results, a curriculum vitae, a 500-word autobiographical sketch demonstrating motivation for and commitment to the intent of the award, three writing samples (preferably in journalistic form), and three letters of recommendation (which may be the same letters required for admission to the Program);
* have had an undergraduate grade point average of "B" (3.0 GPA) or better for the last two years of study;
* have completed previous studies in related fields such as journalism, basic sciences, English, literature, and/or public health;
* have prior work history or other demonstrated experience in journalism or health care;
* demonstrate financial need for this award (as determined by appropriate financial aid qualification procedures at the School).

Preference is given to minority and disadvantaged students. Application deadline is Jan. 1 for admission the following fall. For more information, contact Dr. Linden, director of the Medical Journalism Program, at linden@unc.edu.

The University of Texas Austin Frank Morrow Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Business Journalism

Eligibility Requirements:

  • GPA of 3.75 or above
  • You do not already have a bachelor’s degree
  • Taken courses in business, economics, accounting,
    marketing, and/or psychology
  • At least 45 hours in residence at UT Austin

It’s the national day of love and we’re smack dab in the middle of Black History Month.

So, in honor of the great beating muscle that has been the subject of so many love songs and the month that reminds us that there are more contributions to history than students are taught in standard American History classes, I’ve gathered some medical and Black History Month Scholarships for ya. Enjoy!

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program

  • A six week academic enrichment program for undergrads from minority groups, rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Submit application online
  • Send in transcripts - it takes 10 days for processing.
  • Send in letters of recommendation - 10 days to process that as well.
  • Deadline: March 1, 2008 *Get on the ball with this one, time’s running out!

"A Day in Black History" Scholarship Contest

  • Based on essay submission, students could win $500!
  • Any student of any ethnicity and grade level is eligible to participate.
  • Just write a 600 - 800 word essay about your favorite African American contributor to society,
  • And send in your scholarship form.
  • Deadline is Feb. 29, with the winner announced on March 31st.

The great thing about the medical scholarship, it allows you to learn how to mend a broken heart, something that usually takes years and many relationships to figure out.

And the Black History scholarship prompts everyone to delve a little deeper into black history, nothing like a pause for the cause.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships

In celebration and recognition of today’s national holiday, here are some scholarships that keep to Dr. King’s legacy of social justice.

Boston University

This scholarship provides a four year full ride! The rigors of this free ride are stringent, but not having student loans make it totally worth it. Each recipient has to complete 100 community services hours each year minimum. And according to their Web site the average recipients high school GPA is 3.80, they rank in the top 5% of their class with an average SAT score of 1370 reading and math; 700 writing.

Bad news is the deadline for this scholarship was December 1st, but put this in the hanger for next year.

Providence College

What started out as a small scholarship with 11 African American student recipients has grown to 127 students of a variety of cultural backgrounds. This scholarship offers a combination of full and patricidal scholarships. The due date is March 1.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Physician and Dentist Scholarship

For State of New Jersey residents and those who plan to enroll full-time toward a medical degree - M.D., D.O., or D.M.D. - at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The scholarship is based on financial need.

The Western States Scholarship Dentistry Program

The Western States Dentistry Scholarship Program is designed for students who are interested in career opportunities within the field of dentistry. This is an annual scholarship.

To be eligible for the award, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the U.S.
  • Reside in one of the following states: Washington, Alaska, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, or Utah.
  • Be 16 years or older at the time of application.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited university by 2013.
  • Be pursuing a degree in dentistry.
  • Interested applicants should submit an essay that responds to the following question:

    “You have been selected to write an article for a children’s book about dental health. In 250 words or less, what would you tell them about maintaining their teeth and gums?”

    Relief for Scholarship Worries?

    Tylenol is now in the business of relieving financial burdens by offering scholarship programs to noteworthy students. The company is currently giving away more than $250,000 in financial assistance to college students studying medicine.

    This scholarship is administered by Scholarship Program Administrators, Inc. When you visit the Tylenol website, click on the application link and you will be redirected to the Scholarship Program Administrators website.

    Start the application process by obtaining an AIS number from the site. Simply register and provide the information requested, and this number will be provided to you. The questions are brief and informal, and require that your provide contact information such as your address and phone number.

    After completing that part, you will then be able to login and complete the application process through a secured site where you can access the scholarships made available by Tylenol.

    The Northeast States Dentistry Scholarship Program

    The Northeast States Dentistry Scholarship Program is designed for students who are interested in career opportunities within the field of dentistry.

    To be eligible for this annual award, students must:

  • Be citizens of the U.S.
  • Must reside in one of the following states: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island.
  • Be 16 years or older at the time of application.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited university by 2013.
  • Be pursuing a business or sales major.
  • Interested applicants should submit an essay that responds to the following question in 250 words or less:

    Cosmetic dentistry is becoming more widely accepted and popular. As a future dentist, would you recommend cosmetic dentistry over a more traditional regimen of yearly exams and fluoride treatments as a way to maintain dental health? Why or why not?

    The Autism Scholarship Challenge

    Think you know something about autism? Want to learn more? Well now you have an incentive in the form of $500!

    The Autism Scholarship Challenge was developed by the University of Miami/Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. It is sponsored through the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation.

    To be eligible for this award, you must:

  • Be a resident of the United States.
  • Be a high school, college, or graduate student.
  • Or be the parent of a high school, college, or graduate student.
  • According to the website, this scholarship focuses on “what participants know about autism and associated speech, language and communication disorders.”

    The quizzes are available on the website each year in April. Questions are taken from the following sites:

    There are two $250 awards available. One award will be given to a student who is a resident of Florida; the other will be reserved for the highest scoring out-of-state applicant. For more information, visit CKFS.org.

    Minority Dental Student Scholarship

    This scholarship opportunity made possible by the American Dental Association is much like the American Dental Association Scholarship, also reviewed on this site. The only key difference is that according to the website students must be one of the specific groups that the ADA has identified as a minority in dental school enrollment. Today these groups include African American, Hispanic, and Native American students.

    This is a $2,500 award that is offered annually. There are currently 25 Minority Dental Student Scholarships available.

    To be eligible, students must:

  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be in their second year of dental school.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a full-time student.
  • Provide two letters from dental school representatives.
