Fifty States, Fifty Opportunities for Scholarship!

Today kicks off our 50 states, 50 scholarship blog segment. In our efforts to serve students all over the country, we want to highlight scholarships from every state in the union.

We won’t get to every school, but we will be able to hit regions that are often neglected. How many scholarships do you hear about coming from Alaska? Well there are some and we think plenty of students will be interested. You never know where the perfect opportunity may pop up!

Speaking of Alaska…

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Scholarship and Internship Opportunities

File this one away for next year as the deadline for this year has passed, but it’s a great opportunity!

  • Five scholarships of five-thousand (5,000) dollars are awarded  per academic year in healthcare-related fields to full-time undergraduate students 
  • Five scholarships of five-thousand (5,000) dollars per academic year in healthcare-related fields to full-time graduate students
  • Students must be Alaska Native or American Indian permanent Alaska residents.

CPAI 2008 Scholarship Program
Another future scholarship! The ConocoPhillips Alaska scholarship program is open to Alaska high school seniors planning to attend an institution of higher learning, academic or trade school.

  • Seven $5,000 in-state scholarships and thirteen $3,000 general scholarships will be awarded to Alaskan high school seniors.
  • A panel of judges will select the winners based on each student’s future potential to contribute their knowledge and talents in Alaska. In addition, each student’s service to their community, service to their school, school achievements, and financial need will be taken into consideration.

John L. Carey Scholarships

The American Institue of Certified Public Accountants scholarship program provides financial assistance to liberal arts degree holders pursuing graduate studies in accounting and the CPA designation.  

  • Obtained a liberal arts degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States prior to enrolling in graduate accounting program.
  • Have been accepted into, or are in the process of applying to, a graduate program in accounting that is accredited by AACSB International or ACBSP. This program will enable you to sit for the CPA Examination. Students who are already actively participating in a graduate accounting program are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • You intend to pursue a CPA certificate.
  • You will be a full-time graduate (9 semester hours or equivalent) student for academic year 2008-2009.
  • You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green-card holder).

APA - Not Just a Writing Style

Many students know APA from the little style guides English teachers pass out before term papers are due. Well, besides telling people where to put a comma and how to cite books, the APA is also a place where psychology students, specifically graduate students can apply for a number of scholarships.

Psych students, break out your curriculum vitae and get moving, most of these scholarships are due on May 16th - yep, three days from now!

The Carol Williams-Nickelson Award for Women’s Leadership and Scholarship in Women’s Issues

Eligibility:

  • Be a female American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS).
  • Be in good academic standing in a doctoral program
  • Not an APAGS officers or subcommittee chair.

Required Materials:

  • A cover letter that includes the name of the award and introduction to application packet
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Essay

Francis and Evelyn Clark Soil Biology Scholarship

For a $1000 scholarship, you just need to:

-be a graduate student working in the field of soil biology or biochemistry or microbial ecology.
- demonstrate scholarship and leadership during his/her graduate studies.
-special financial need

J. Fielding Reed Scholarship

This scholarship is for outstanding undergraduate seniors pursuing careers in soil or plant sciences. The scholarship is in the amount of $1000.

Eligibility:
-an undergraduate, pursuing a career in the plant or soil sciences
-3.0, or above, cumulative grade point average
-a history of community and campus leadership activities, specifically in agriculture

Hot Off the Presses, More Journalism Scholarships!

University of North Carolina Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship

According to their Web site, "the purpose of the Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship is to improve the breadth and quality of reporting of health and medical issues in minority or disadvantaged communities."

This scholarship offers a $6,000 stipend per semester, tuition, health insurance for all four semesters of the master program. Whoo hoo!

To qualify:

* be regularly admitted to the Medical Journalism Master’s Program in the School;
* have submitted a completed application for the award, including academic transcripts, GRE test results, a curriculum vitae, a 500-word autobiographical sketch demonstrating motivation for and commitment to the intent of the award, three writing samples (preferably in journalistic form), and three letters of recommendation (which may be the same letters required for admission to the Program);
* have had an undergraduate grade point average of "B" (3.0 GPA) or better for the last two years of study;
* have completed previous studies in related fields such as journalism, basic sciences, English, literature, and/or public health;
* have prior work history or other demonstrated experience in journalism or health care;
* demonstrate financial need for this award (as determined by appropriate financial aid qualification procedures at the School).

Preference is given to minority and disadvantaged students. Application deadline is Jan. 1 for admission the following fall. For more information, contact Dr. Linden, director of the Medical Journalism Program, at linden@unc.edu.

The University of Texas Austin Frank Morrow Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Business Journalism

Eligibility Requirements:

  • GPA of 3.75 or above
  • You do not already have a bachelor’s degree
  • Taken courses in business, economics, accounting,
    marketing, and/or psychology
  • At least 45 hours in residence at UT Austin

Easter Seal Society of Iowa Disability Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must have a permanent disability
  • A resident of Iowa
  • At least a 2.8 GPA and
  • Financial Need

The minimum award for this scholarship is $750 and the max is $1,000.

Easter Island Foundation

The Wiegand Educations Scholarship Award

Two $2,000 awards for one male & one female student that is renewable.

Criteria:

  • Under 30 residents of Rapa Nui heritage
  • Decided based on academic performance, short essay
  • Annual progress report from recipient

St. Lukes United Methodist Church Easter Egg Project College & Professional Scholarship

Info:

  • Must be an active member of St. Luke’s
  • Must either be a recent high school graduate or attending college
  • Scholarship is renewable for 5 years max.

Journalism Scholarships!

Still celebrating Women’s History Month with journalism scholarships in honor of Mary Katherine Goddard - the first woman publisher in America (1766) and Ida B. Wells - an African American journalist born a slave just before the Emancipation Proclamation, went to work as a teacher when she had to support her family after her parents died in an epidemic. She wrote on racial justice for Memphis newspapers as a reporter and newspaper owner, and was forced to leave town when a mob attacked her offices in retaliation for writing against an 1892 lynching. 

The American Copy Editors Society Merv Aubespin Scholarship

Criteria:

1. A list of course work relevant to copy editing. You may include courses outside journalism.
2. A list of your copy editing experience, including work on student and professional publications.
3. An essay on what you think makes a good editor and why you want to be a copy editor. Write no more than
750 words, double-spaced.
4. Two recommendation letters: one from a faculty member or adviser at your college and one from someone
on a college or professional publication. Letters should include information about your commitment to
professional copy editing.
5. Copies of five to 10 headlines you have written. (Photocopies on 8.5 x 11-inch paper, please.)
6. A copy of a story you’ve edited that demonstrates your ability. Include an explanation of the changes you
made in the story, along with the circumstances under which it was edited (tight deadline, etc.). If
possible, include an unedited version of the story.

South Asian Journalist Association

*File for future application, deadline has passed.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be:
a) of South Asian descent (includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; Indo-Caribbeans are also eligible) OR demonstrate an interest in South Asia or the diaspora

b) serious about pursuing journalism as a career and provide evidence they plan to through courses, internships or freelancing

c) one of the following: a high school senior about to enroll in an accredited college or university in North America; a current student in an accredited college or university (two-year or four-year) in North America; or a student enrolled or about to enter a graduate-level program in North America.

Persina Scholarship for Diversity in Journalism

* No more than five (5) work samples demonstrating an ongoing interest in journalism through work on a high school newspaper or other media. These may be print articles (reduced to 8 ½ by 11 size), or multimedia stories on tape, CD or DVD (three copies of all media).
* A one-page essay on why you are interested in becoming a journalist and how your unique perspectives, experiences and background will help bring diversity to newsrooms and broaden the way news organizations cover communities.
* Three letters of recommendations from persons who are not members of your family (MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE SAME PACKAGE).
* A copy of your high school transcript (MUST BE MAILED IN SAME PACKAGE ALONG WITH ALL OTHER INFORMATION).
* A completed signed copy of the Financial Aid Form (FAFSA) that you submitted.
* A letter of acceptance from the college/university of your choice or some documentation indicating where you have applied.
* OPTIONAL: A very brief statement on how this scholarship would affect your decision-making about your higher education.

Feldman Fellowship for Graduate Studies in Journalism

The National Press Club offers a one-year stipend of $5,000 to defray post-graduate tuition costs for graduate students in journalism.

The fellowship is named for Dennis Feldman, a club member who had a long career as a journalist and public relations adviser after putting himself through grad school at night.

Due May 1st.

* The NPC Scholarship/Fellowship application form.
* Three letters of recommendation (none may come from family members).
* A financial statement and/or copies of any documents you are providing to your university to qualify for financial assistance.
* A statement describing your course of study. Indicate whether you will attend full-time or part-time and when you will complete your program.
* A list of schools where you have applied, or the name of the graduate program you are attending.
* A brief biographical statement, explaining why you wish to obtain a graduate degree in journalism.
* OPTIONAL: Work samples including newspaper articles (no more than five; reduced to 8 1/2" by 11" size), audio or video tapes.
The National Press Club realizes that some journalism grad school applicants are seeking to change careers and therefore may not have clips or tapes. You will not be penalized. But judges would like to see some work samples from applicants with journalism experience.

Cedarville University Effect Leader Awards

Students must show evidence of extensive leadership and service and submit a letter of recommendation for this one time award of $1,000 - $1,500. Other criteria include:

  • 22 or better on the ACT
  • 1050 or better on the SAT
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Application

Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship

For undergrads and grads, the competitive scholarship is to help Latina students complete their degree. To apply for the $1,500 scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Chicana/Latina women of the Northern California Counties
  • Enrolled in accredited colleges, universities and community colleges in the one of the listed Northern California Counties
  • A resident for at least two years in one of the listed Northern California Counties
  • Undergraduate Chicana/Latina students must be enrolled as a full-time college student, have completed a minimum of 15 college semester units after high school graduation, and have at least a 2.5 GPA
  • Graduate students must provide verification of acceptance to a graduate school
  • All candidates must have demonstrated leadership and civic/community involvement.
  • Applicants must agree, if awarded a scholarship, to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours in the next year in support of the Chicana/Latina Foundation.
  • Applicants who received a Chicana/Latina Foundation scholarship within the past four (4) years are not eligible to apply for a scholarship.
  • All scholarship recipients are required to attend the Leadership Institute.
  • Applications must be received by March 17th, 2008.

The New Mexico State University Leadership Scholarship

Leadership scholars receive a fat scholarship to NMSU worth over $25,000 for four years. These brains also receive the opportunity participate in the Honors College at NMSU. To apply you must :

  • Be a New Mexico resident
  • Be an entering freshman directly from high school
  • Fill out FAFSA
  • Demonstrate superior academic and leadership skills
  • Fill out Application

Remember, leadership isn’t just student government or Prom committee, it’s leadership at your part-time job or heading a class or group project. It’s organizing a boycott of the cafeteria’s trans-fat-heavy mystery meat or it’s being on the decorating committee for the formal. Think creatively about how your activities and passions could help you get monies for college.

U.S. Fulbright Student Grant Program

Interested in trotting the globe? The U.S. Fulbright Grant Program is now accepting applications for their annual grant program. This program was put into place by the United States congress in 1946 in order to “enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” If this is one of your own personal goals, you may be interested in this program.

The U.S. Fulbright Student Grant Program spans 140 countries and it awards over 1300 grants annually to U.S. citizens in all fields of study.

To be eligible students must:

  • Be recent BA/BS graduates pursuing a higher degree.
  • Young professionals interested in continuing their education.
  • Artists.
  • Course work, independent field research, and professional training in the arts are some of the main opportunities available within the program. Additionally the U.S. Fulbright Student Program seeks to aid in the personal and professional development of their scholars while providing them with unmatched international experience that will broaden and strengthen their worldview.
