The Public Relations Challenge

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Many students with a knack for writing simply are not sure what to do with their talents. Scholarships that test these abilities are a great place to start and—if you’re good enough—you might just find yourself getting paid for your ideas.

The Public Relations Challenge is offered by the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation. Unlike many of the foundations other scholarships which are “essay free,” this scholarship does require that you brush the dust off your pencil and partake in some old fashioned writing exercises.

The Public Relations Challenge specifically requires students to use their critical thinking skills and apply them to PR-like situations that involve representing a company or individual, being the face for a product, launching promotions, writing press releases, and collaborating to improve the company image.

Writing skills will help you in each of these areas of public relations and this quiz is designed to show you how. The quiz consists of two parts: the first is multiple choice, and the second is a brief newspaper article.

According to the website, the current topics include:

Write about a person in your life that has greatly influenced you.

Write about your plans for after college graduation (career, hobbies, volunteer work, etc).

Write about an important accomplishment/milestone in your life, college, or work.

This scholarship is offered each year in February. The first place winner will receive $250 and have his or her article published in the CKSF Newsletter. The second and third place winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

Applicant Etiquette From Start to Finish

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Don’t let poor manners hinder you from getting a scholarship; take the appropriate measures to ensure that the scholarship sponsor views you as a respectful, gracious, and appreciative candidate. There’s little worse than receiving an application or submission from an overtly thankless student who expects that there is a chance that they will be awarded with free cash.

If you follow the rules of applicant etiquette for each and every scholarship that you submit, your odds of winning will increase tenfold. First impressions make the difference, whether they should or not. The internet has put a great deal of distance between the scholarship sponsor and the applicants, so much distance, that it is easy for students to forget that people actually review each scholarship submissions—not computers.

When the scholarship selection committees review each submission, they are undoubtedly influenced by the overall presentation. Tattered papers, ink smudges, and misspelled words all stand out; more than anything, overt carelessness will cause the submission reviewer to form a negative impression of you very quickly. The impression formed by the condition of your submission packet will influence how the reviewer critiques your essay likely determine how deserving of financial assistance that he feels you are.

After observing the state of applicant submissions first hand, I feel confident in affirming that you don’t have to be a whiz to earn a scholarship, you just have to put in the time. The sooner you begin your scholarship search, the better off you will be. You won’t just be allowing yourself to submit to more scholarships, but you’ll be allowing yourself enough leeway to kick your submissions packets into shape and wow some reviewers before the award deadline.
