Irvine Welsh Is Going George Lucas on Us…

Thinks Jar Jar Binks was on smack
In what can’t be a good idea, the increasingly irrelevant Welsh is working on a prequel to his breakthrough novel Trainspotting. While I personally haven’t read any of the man’s books, this can’t be a good idea. I know his subsequent novels haven’t lived up to his debut in literary (or entertainment) circles, but as The Guardian hints at, this seems like a good old-fashioned laurel resting. Or maybe not. I mean, Muppet Babies ruled. Why can’t Junkie Babies be just as good? And if you’re reading this, Irvine, I want credit if you use that title.
Two great eulogies for Arthur C. Clarke. Here and here.
Oh, and just to bring the two Welsh references together, here’s Muppet Babies doing Star Wars.
Scott at Conversational Reading is a little baffled by this parody piece in the NY Times. I just think it’s completely unfunny and stupid.
From Bookslut, here is Cracked talking about how Disney changed old fairy tales. Yeah, that’s right- Cracked.
And finally, I mentioned Obama’s race speech yesterday without knowing The Millions would be able to make some literary observation about it. So nice going, guys. They talk about how a slightly altered Faulkner quote was used in Obama’s speech and how they believe that Obama is looking at the past through a Faulknerian lens. And yes, Faulknerian is actually in the dictionary.
