    The spillway is located between the Blue Lake and el Rito, meaning "the rite." Its purpose is to serve as an overflow basin for the lake.

    On this side of the lake there was a concrete wall with a spillway. As the lake filled it emptied in a slow trickle into el Rito. No one was allowed to swim along the wall because the water was very deep and full of thick weeds, and because the lifeguard was on the other side.

    This location will prove fatal for Florence, as he risks his life by diving into the lake from the spillway, hitting his head on a rock when he does so. It is telling that Florence, who challenges the authority of the church, & who does not live long enough to be initiated into the religion of the golden carp, dies near the river known as "el Rito". He never experiences the rite of passage into knowledge and wholeness.
