I think that obama being president is a good thing, or at least in my eyes. The reasoning is that not only is he the first african american president, but he has a different out look on things in the united states. You might see changes right away or you might not, they dont happen when people want them to and I'm sure he already has plans to change the things that former president bush messed up.

The former president is always the first to be criticized when things go wrong.  Bill Clinton was blamed for problems (namely Osama bin Laden not being caught among others) which is why Bush was elected.  People always want to find someone to blame.  We as Americans need to stop looking for someone to blame and take collective responsibility.  When that occurs, I truly believe that racism and prejudice will also fall by the wayside.  When we can stop drawing lines in the sand--Democrat, Republican, Black, White, etc.--we will be better able and equipped to see the true problem and get to the bottom of it.  No presidency is perfect, and I am sure that Obama will make his fair share of mistakes.  People are prone to mistakes.  However, we will all benefit more when we are able to work out the kinks without finger-pointing and mud-slinging.

Although I did not vote for him and am very nervous about the societal changes that could be made in the next 4 years, I do agree that having an African American president is a good thing. It is remarkable that we are less than 150 years away from the end of slavery, and an African American has been able to attain the highest seat of government. I don't think there has ever been a time in history when a formerly oppressed people were ever able to rise so high.
