There are people in the world who do not speak English, or at least do not speak it well.  So many English-speakers do not even consider the benefits of learning another language, because they feel that the whole world should learn their language.  If you can only speak English (or any one language), then you can only communicate with people who speak the same language you speak.  The more languages you learn, the more people you can speak with and understand.

As an example:  I teach high school English courses, but I also speak Spanish.  I have students in my classes who do not understand English well, but are native speakers of Spanish.  Since I speak Spanish, I can communicate with these students and help them feel comfortable in my classes.  Without my bilingual abilities, I would not be able to do that, and those students might be lost in my classroom and I wouldn't be able to help them.
