Although the authorship of the Bhagavad Gita cannot be traced to an individual, someone inserted the Bhagavad Gita into the Mahabharata, an ancient and highly popular Indian Hindu epic. The Mahabharata, which consists of some 180,000 lines, is the product of a process of oral transmission and was probably written down by 400 b.c.e.
