Betty Naomi Goldstein was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Peoria, Illinois. A sickly child, considered by some to be unattractive, she was a highly gifted young woman. Graduating first in her high school class, Goldstein traveled east to Smith College to major in psychology. During her college years, she distinguished herself as a journalist by serving as editor of the school paper.
