As Grendel broke into the mead-hall in the night,Beowulf chose to fight Grendel hand to hand, without a sword or a shield. Beowulf was able to grasp the monster hard and to tear one of his arms off. Grendel had to flee mortally wounded. The monster escaped to his underwater lair to die.

The most important thing about Grendel making it back to his mother's underwater cave is that it continues the story. Once Grendel makes it back to the cave, Grendel's mother finds out what has happened and decides to get her vengeance.
Grendel's mother kills one of Hrothgar's men and so Beowulf must track her down and face an even more deadly enemy in a woman who has lost her son. This battle is one not easily won by Beowulf.
