The part the Stone Gods played were the objects of Pagan rituals. These offerings that the people of Herot made showed the root of their beliefs still lay in paganism. In this time in history Christianity was rather new so in a time of panic they reverted to paganistic practices. These Stone Gods show that.

    In Beowulf:
"sacrificed to the old stone gods / Made heathen vows / hoping for Hell's Support, the Devil's guidance in driving their
    affliction off." 175-178
