Beowulf is a story about heroism. Beowulf comes to the aid of the Danes because he's heard about Grendel and Grendel's terrorism. His reason for fighting the monster is mostly selfless. He does not fight with a weapon because the monster has no weapon. In a hand-to-hand battle with Grendel, Beowulf defeats the monster. When Grendel's mother attacks the next night, Beowulf risks his life again to fight the monster. Finally, Beowulf, even though he's old and he knows the fire-breathing dragon that is attacking his village will probably kill him, bravely goes into battle with only his sword, his shield, and one warrior. Despite his age, he is able to deliver a blow to the dragon before Wiglaf brings down the dragon. All of these deeds are examples of heroism: one who puts the needs of others before himself and faces danger in order to save others.
