Baby Suggs has a more positive attitude than Sethe. Sethe's soul has been beaten down by the difficulties she has faced in her life.  It is even noted in the novel that her eyes are simply wells where a soul used to be (or something similar to that).  Baby Suggs, though, tries to encourage others and keep hope alive, and she does this successfully.  She has a "great heart" and gives others a place to go to talk, vent, and share their problems, hopes, dreams, and difficulties.
