Even from the very first two sentences of the novel, Beloved, we are told that the baby ghost is powerful. "124 was spiteful. Full of a baby's venom" (3). Yes, the baby ghost is absolutely powerful enough to scare the two sons away. (Just wait until you get further in the book and see what else she does.) For now, nothing is more definite than the power of this ethereal spirit:

The grandmother, Baby Suggs, was dead, and the sons,...

That these two have selected their own names reveals their independence and their rebellion against slavery. Slaves typically were named by those who owned them, not by their own parents. Stamp Paid notes that "They called me Joshua"; Baby Suggs' original slave name was Jenny Whitlow. All of the Pauls who work for the Garners are other examples; they are distinguished only by a middle initial. Sethe's name is apparently an exception because...

She goes to Lady Jones because she can remember her, and Lady Jones is responsible for alerting the church members about the sad situation involving Sethe's deteriorating physical condition and the debilitating influence Beloved seems to have. They provide food for the family.

The most obvious answer to this question is that Denver acts as a mother to Sethe by taking care of her. Denver nurses her mother when she is sick. She also gets a job to help support her mother and 124. It can also be argued that Denver is more emotionally mature than Sethe. While she does act out for her mother's attention at the beginning of the novel, she quickly matures into the emotional stronghold of the house. Sethe becomes more and...

Toni Morrison uses language to express the culture of the black community."In Beloved, Morrison makes use of idiom to help re-create the sense of a specific community, that of African Americans in Reconstruction Ohio. When the characters use words like "ain't" and "reckon" and phrases like "sit down a spell," it helps place their characters within that community." "One particularly interesting...
