The Bell Jar | Adaptations

The Bell Jar was adapted into a well-intentioned but forgettable 1979 film (directed by Larry Peerce for Avco Embassy; screenplay by Marjorie Kellogg). The motion picture, starring Marilyn Hassett as Esther, is largely faithful to Plath's plot, but the film was almost universally panned for its wrenching alterations in the novel's characters: Buddy Willard (Jameson Parker) becomes a sexually aggressive square, the fashion magazine editor (Barbara Barrie) is a brittle closet lesbian, and Esther's psychological woes are milked dry for sensationalism.
