The Middle Ages
The historical events on which Becket is based took place during the twelfth century, culminating with the death of Becket in 1170. Anouilh openly admits his error in making Becket’s Saxon parentage an important thematic device in the play. Historically, Becket was born to a prosperous Norman merchant.
