Shute's writing reflected his very moral upbringing and world view. In none of his novels, for example, does a married man knowingly have an affair. Jean Paget, heroine of A Town Like Alice (1950), recovers herself, in a moment of passion with her beloved, just in time to prevent the premature loss of her virginity before her marriage (which occurs soon after in the novel).
