On the Beach was made into a film in 1959. Perhaps too long (133 minutes), it is a powerful antiwar statement, directed a bit too overzealously by Stanley Kramer. It stars Gregory Peck in the role of Towers, with Ava Gardner as his love interest, and with Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire in supporting roles. Overall, the motion picture is brilliant, capturing much of the mood and moral message of the novel.
