What do you think this story tell us about southern culture?

Since this is the discussion board and not a formal Q&A, I feel a little freer about giving my opinion. As I've stated in other discussions, we southern people get accused of never forgetting the Civil War, but there are way too many people who keep bringing it up. Honestly, somebody needs to give us credit for huge improvements we've made. Louisiana and Virginia had the first African American governors, South Carolina had the first African American member of Congress, and Mississippi had the first African American Senator! The whole country needs improvement, not just the south.

So what does the story say about southern culture? It has more to say about the poor white culture nationwide. Barn burning is not a southern pasttime.

Many years ago, I spent a summer semester at a major university. Every afternoon, students would gather to play soccer. One day, someone got injured, and they called 911. In a few minutes, an old, beat-up stationwagon that was so dirty you couldn't tell what color it was came speeding onto the field. Out jumped three men: one with his belly hanging over his pants, all wearing plaid and bluejeans and baseball caps. They were the local paramedics! What state did this take place in? VERMONT!!
