BSU Slang
Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Ball State. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.
AJ – The Art and Journalism Building houses classrooms, computer labs, a bookstore, a Starbucks, and the Atrium food court.
Bennie – Statue of Beneficence, a winged female figure holding a treasure chest, was built by the city of Muncie in the early part of the last century to commemorate the generosity of the Ball family.
Bull Sh*t University – A popular, alternate meaning for the letters BSU.
The Cow Path – A paved trail that that begins on Petty Avenue, goes behind the Robert Bell building, Ball Communications, the Art and Journalism building, and the Teacher's College, and ends up on Riverside Avenue.
The Dill Hole – A nickname for The Dill Street Bar & Grill, a popular dance club in the Village.
Fruit Jar Tech – A reference to the Ball Corporation, which played a key part in the University's development. The term has largely fallen out of use among students in recent years.
Hotdog Man – Refers to Mark Carter, a fixture at Ball State, who runs a hotdog stand at the corner of Dill Street and University Avenue, on the Village's west end.
Laugh-a-lot – A nickname for LaFollette residence complex, a dorm that is heavily populated by freshman students.
Premium Plan- A University housing contract that promises better parking and reduced on-campus housing rates for students who agree to live in the dorms for two years.
RB – The Robert Bell Building. Many of the University's English classes are taught in this building.
Scramble Light – The heavily-trafficked intersection of Riverside and McKinley avenues. It is the only place on campus where you can legally jaywalk.
Sh*t Creek – A nickname for the drainage ditch on the west side of the Studebaker West residence complex.
Sniper Tower – A nickname for the Schaffer bell tower on McKinley Avenue near the Petty Street intersection.
Stu-East/Stu-West – Refers to Studebaker East and Studebaker West residence complexes, respectively.
Taking a Victory Lap – Going to college for a fifth year
The Village – A business district on the campus's southeast side. The Village has many college necessities, including several bars, a convenience store, and a pizza joint.
UPB – The abbreviation for the University Program Board, an organization that sponsors social events around campus.
