    "The Bald Soprano" is an absurdist drama. As such, the usual qualities of a drama just don't fit. All we can say about Donald Martin is that he is male, that his name is Donald Martin, and that he is married to a woman named Elizabeth. They may or may not have a daughter named Alice who has one red eye and one white eye. As the writer of the eNotes study guide notes, the characters in this play "are mechanical puppets or interchangeable parts, not pliable humans."

    "The Bald Soprano" is difficult for an audience member to follow, and that was the playwright's intention. Ionesco wanted to express his belief that language had become just a formality, that we talk and talk and never really say anything.
