The Story:

A Brightly Lit Room. Dr. Piller brought Baal together with Mech and his wife Emily because Mech was interested in publishing Baal’s poems. Baal was interested in the white arms of Mech’s wife. He drunkenly insulted both Mech and Dr. Piller until they left in a rage.

Baal’s Attic. Johannes confided to Baal that he had not seduced his seventeen-year old fiancée, Johanna, because of her innocence. He confessed that he believed the union of bodies was filthy, although he enjoyed making love to Johanna in his dreams. Baal extolled the ecstasies...
