The Story:
In the 1880’s, a young American literary scholar heard that a woman who had long ago been the mistress of the famous American poet Jeffrey Aspern was still alive, in Venice. It was rumored that this old woman, Juliana Bordereau, had a cache of Jeffrey Aspern’s papers, mostly letters. Frantic to lay his hands on the papers, the young man vowed to do whatever it took to get hold of them. Unfortunately, Juliana Bordereau, who was said to be close to death, never received visitors.
