There is a great deal of interest in the music different generations appreciate. The current music that kids appreciate seems to be music to be danced to, as well as featuring a very heavy beat. Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, as well as others are music that might not be very big on messages, but speak to many kdis. I am not sure if it is meant to say anything other than each generation finds music as a form of culture to help bridge their experiences and create a level of "difference" and "uniqueness" from others. Say "music" and "current generation" in the same sentence, and most people think of rap. Some of it is shocking and violent, but certainly not all of it. To make broad generalizations about young people on the basis of some controversial rap lyrics would be ridiculous. Today's youth also listen to country and rock (both hard and soft). So, what music does this current generation listen to? All kinds. What does this say about them? I think it says they are an interesting group of individuals with various musical tastes who listen to the music that happens to express their feelings at a particular moment--just as their parents did. And like their parents, they seem to like music best when it is played at one volume: loud! Posted by mshurn on Sep 10, 2009. |
