    The definition of the cinematic or literary term "exposition," be it in a film, novel, short story or other dramatic work, involves background information about the characters or other situations. It reveals what has happened before the main action that has already been introduced. It also gives additional supporting evidence to help build the depth of character, to elaborate on the theme, and to aid in the development of the conflict. Exposition can occur in a flashback or can be created through specific dialog that details past events not previously shown visually.
