The Story:
Raina was in her bedroom on the second floor of the Petkoff house in a small town in Bulgaria when her mother entered to tell her that Sergius had just led the Bulgarians to victory in battle with the Serbs. Raina rejoiced; her idealistic expectations of war and soldiers had been met. Louka entered to tell them that the army had ordered them to lock all the doors and windows while enemy stragglers were being pursued. Catherine and Louka left.
