The young boy is initiated into the disappointments of first love. It marks his growth from an innocent boy who has fallen madly in love into a young man who realizes he has acted foolishly about Mangan's sister. The boy is so innocent at the beginning of the story that he confuses his religious teachings with his infatuation. He sees Mangan's sister as the Virgin Mary, showing his lack of experience in love and life. He idealizes Mangan's sister and goes to the bazaar to buy something exotic for her. When he overhears the conversation between the man and woman at the bazaar, he experiences an "epiphany", a sudden realization that he has behaved ridiculously. He is angry at himself and his ideals of romantic love are crushed.
