The greatest of Cather's Nebraska novels. My Antonia, is based on recollections of her childhood on the prairie and her adolescence in Red Cloud. Just as the immigrant pioneer characters struggling to get a foothold in their new environment are drawn from the Bohemian, Swedish, and German farmers Cather knew as a child, so are the townspeople of Black Hawk inspired by her teenage memories.
