At the start of the play Antigone, we learn that Creon (her uncle and, therefore, Oedipus' brother-in-law) has inherited the throne. After Oedipus casts himself out for his actions at the end of Oedipus Rex, he went off with the help of his daughter Antigone and left his two sons, Eteocles and Polynices, heirs to the throne. However, the two boys fought viciously over the throne to their deaths.  It was this betrayal on Polynices' part that forced Creon, who has now inherited the crown as the next male heir, to decree that Polynices was not to be buried. However, Antigone defies his decree and buries his brother.
