   I think in both works, the general way women were treated rings true, even though the two works are worlds apart in subject matter and settings.  In both works, women were supposed to have their "place" in society and when women tried to break that norm and what was expected of them, they faced ridicule and resistance and were seen as insignificant or defiant.  Their opinions weren't respected in many ways and they were not expected to "intrude" upon the duties of men, etc.  They were oppressed in many ways during these times in both works.
