    1- The condescending attitude of the American girl.

    2- Powerful people think they can lay their hands on everything or anyone they want to. 

    3- The conflict between coloured people and white is symbolised by Beatrice's refusal to talk and the American girl's aloofness. Sam tries unsuccessfully to engage both of them in a conversation.
