The plot of this novel is anything but linear, as several critics have noted. Varying accounts by the ‘‘witnesses,’’ thwarting of chronological order, and insertions of myths, legends, and other stories to enhance the plot and help the reader and the characters to understand the action in a larger framework all serve to make the book read recursively like a poem. One critic notes in the narrative a ‘‘process of subversion,’’ (Kanaganayakam) but if there is one, we have to ask what reasons Achebe might have for it.
