    Yes, it matters markedly that the major had been a skilled fencer. There are several reasons. First, fencing is holdover from another age. It is a sign of an aristocratic background, and a holdover from a time of honor. It signifies a different kind of warfare, one that allows for greater humanity. Second, he is a man of excellence. That is to say, he knows how much it costs in personal effort to be good at something. If you connect the two, this background fits him to be a man who understands what's important in life, and why love matters.
