The major has led his life on the battlefield as a good, strong soldier. It would appear that nothing gets to him. Yet, he is inconsolable at the news of his wife's death, and he learns from his experience. He is no longer a machine, he learns that he cannot control everything. It takes a real man to know what he has lost, and learn from it.
