The Story:
Rufus Scott, an African American musician, was in a desperate
condition. He not only had no money, but also had fallen out of
contact with his friends and his family. He had been out of touch
for about a month and a half. Moreover, the most foreboding aspect
of Rufus’ condition was his total despair. This despair
resulted primarily from his complete alienation from those who had
formerly been close to him. As Rufus wandered the streets of New
York, he remembered his relationships with people he loved. He
realized that his love was often mixed with hostility. For...
