    Like many young people, Annie becomes obsessed with what she does not understand.  She sneaks off to funerals to try to understand death and why it has to happen.  The death of the humpbacked girl fascinates her because it was a girl in her own school.  She has not considered mortality before, and especially not the mortality of people she knows.  She is eager to both comprehend and challenge this truth.
