The diary describes Annes conflicts with the others (especially her mother) and her growing closeness to Peter.
It is a time for maturing for Anne, as she adjusts to the isolation. However, she never quite lets go of her dreams of life after the war, life outside of the annex.
The action rises as the situation becomes more and more tenuous, with fears that they would be discovered. Eventually, through and unknown betrayer, the annex residents are arrested and taken to concentration camps, where only Mr. Frank survives.
