Peter, very quiet at first, does slowly open up to Anne, and shares his feelings and aspirations with her.  However, he changes very little from start to finish.  He remains self-conscious and fearful.  Although a compassionate boy, he has little ambition.  His "future plans" include being a loafer or a gambler.  In the end, he is among those that are killed because he does not have the courage to try to hide in the sick ward.

While Peter may not change much as a character, Anne's opinion of him changes.  She sees him more of a person and the reality of that is that he becomes less of her dream-mate.  He has flaws and his lack of ambition affect the way she sees him.
