Anne, who has just turned 13 when the family goes into hiding July 6, 1942, seems somewhat unaware of the gravity of their situation, writing that it feels “more like being on vacation in a very peculiar boardinghouse” than like being in hiding (July 11, 1942). This isn't to suggest that Anne is completely unaware of reality, however, because she also writes: “It is the silence that frightens me so in the evenings and at night . . . I’m very afraid that we shall be discovered and be shot” (July 11, 1942).
